HRYF Recognition and Awards

Leroy Keyes Student-Athlete Award

The Leroy Keyes Student-Athlete Award is given to a high school student who exemplifies leadership in the areas of athleticism, community service and academics.  Each year, the Hampton Roads Youth Foundation Awards Committee will nominate (5) student-athletes to become a finalist for the Leroy Keyes Student-Athlete award.

The nominees will be contacted through their high school coaches and required to fill out a questionnaire listing their academic, athletic and community achievements.  The HRYF awards committee will notify the winners two weeks after receiving all completed applications.  The winner will then be notified by mail.  He/She will then be recognized during the Hampton Roads Youth Foundation sponsor reception which is held during the weekend of the Peninsula All-Star Camp.

The award will embody the legacy of Leroy Keyes, a Newport News, VA native, who excelled in football, basketball and baseball while attending George Washington Carver High School in Newport News, VA.  Leroy then went on to become a stand-out football player at Purdue University.  He still holds many records in the Purdue University record books for his on the field achievements.  As a Boilermaker, he finished 3rd behind O.J. Simpson in the 1968 Heisman Trophy race.

Leroy went on to become a 1969 1st round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles.  After finishing a successful 5 year career in the National Football League, Leroy later went onto to become very successful in the business community.  He now serves as the Assistant Director of the John Purdue Alumni Club for Purdue University.

Damon McDaniel is the 2006 recipient of the Leroy Keyes Student-Athlete Award.  Damon currently attends Florida State University on full athletic scholarship.
